Osage Oranges: Certain Death

I've pondered what these weird things were for years and never bothered to look it up.  Sometimes spotted along the side of a road, these softball-sized rock-things seem particularly dangerous to passing cars.  I've imagined one perfectly timed and dropping through the moon roof and onto my head.  I bet cutting the grass becomes a dreaded chore when you have one of these trees on your property.

Well after reading of this amazing tree and it's many uses, I would disagree with your heading "certain death". I have always wondered about the "hedge apple" as I have heard them called. I will wonder no longer thanks to you.

"The more you know" by Pumpkinrot.....

I know I'm old when I find the history of fence post sources, bows, and tool handles is fascinating.....

We use to throw these things up against a wall and at each other when I was a kid. They hurt when you would get hit by them too. We weren’t too smart as kids, but it was fun.

Then again, we also would shoot fireworks at each other too.......

we would smash jars of corn whiskey over each others' heads and light a match.
such fun.

I have never even heard of osage oranges but the wood is organically beautiful. I could imagine wood sculptures of the branches and stumps as very sought after. (I know I would love it)

i'm a HUGE fan of Lewis & Clarke. cool to read that Meriwether Lewis was sending little slips of these babies to Jefferson!!! "hey, can i borrow a cup of flour & a slip of osage orange pleazzzzz." hahahaha.

from us taking shortcuts thru Mole Street, i eventually became very familiar with Ginkgo berries. the street was always littered (in the Fall) with these giant fat berry things, sorta look like very light green grapes. it was impossible NOT to walk on em. & Phewwwww!!! do they ever stink!!! like a cross between vomit & poop. ughhhhh. when they break & get on your soles, Forget about it man. it smells like you walked thru a field of dog crap. & sometimes, you'll see these ancient little Chinese ladies collecting the berries..probably to make tea, i think. the actual health benefits of ginkgo berries are highly controversial. But...that smell tho. : ((((((((

Total flashback! I haven't seen one of these in at least a decade. Down south they call 'em "Horse Apples"!

neat.
from my extremely minor research i was surprised that it didn't seem to say they were found this far north...but i've seen a decent number of these over the years in different parts of PA.
